Last weekend I visited Chianciano Terme, a lovely town in between Valdorcia and Valdichiana. I was surprised from its charm and from its beautiful surroundings, since I’ve always associated it to thermal baths, in particular to the Sensory SPA.
Chianciano Terme and its medieval center
The center of Chianciano dates back to the Middle Ages and partially preserves its original medieval look. But its origins dates back to Etruscans, as testified by the numerous findings that you can see at the stunning Archaeological Etruscan Museum.
Some of the ancient doors are still visible, as the main one that leads to the tall Clock Tower dating back to the Middle Ages and renovated in modern times. Hanging on the tower you can see the Medici’s coat or arms. Then you reach Piazza Matteotti where there is th 17th century marble fountain and several important buildings including the Town Hall.
Going along via del Solferino you can see several ancient buildings that still preserves their original look. The street are narrows and houses made in red bricks. Going on you reach the Oratorio della Confraternita della Santa Croce preserving an interesting fresco about the Betrayal of Judas. Then you reach the Sun Gates and the Temple of Madonna della Rosa, that is one of the most beautiful churches in Chianciano.
Within the center there are several panoramic points from which you can admire the stunning landscapes. I recommend you stroll around and enjoy the lovely atmosphere.
Where to stay
I really think that Chianciano Terme is the perfect place to discover this part of Tuscany. As a matter of fact you can easily reach the main attractions in Valdorcia and Valdichiana, as well as Florence and Siena.
I want to recommend a lovely hotel that is Hotel Villa Ricci. This family run hotel offers comfortable rooms and a nice and comfy atmosphere. But what I liked the most is the SPA center where you can relax.
The SPA center is a proper holistic center with a water path to regenerate yourself. In addition it offers a wide range of treatments, services and massages of course, such as the stone massage. I can tell you that it’s really great to come back after a day out discovering Tuscany and take a relaxing bath!
